St. Mary’s School
Mrs. Karen Jones, Principal
414 North Main St.
Pontiac, IL 61764
Job Description:
St. Mary’s School is located in Pontiac, IL which is about 40 minutes from Bloomington-Normal, and about 60 minutes from Peoria. We are looking for an energetic, dynamic individual to teach Jr. High Language Arts and LIteracy. The successful candidate will be able to create a learning environment using a variety of techniques to teach all learners. The class benefits from 1:1 technology. Ideal candidates would also be a practicing Catholic who is strong in their Catholic Faith. St. Mary seeks to inspire life-long learners and ignite servant-leaders through a program of academic excellence grounded in the traditions and values of the Holy Catholic Church.
About the Employer:
St. Mary's first opened its doors in 1903 when five nuns from the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary began their mission of educating students. Approximately 100 students in grades 1 - 7 reported for the first classes. Thanks to the generosity of our parish family, our school has prospered for 120 years. Through the late 1990s, the sisters continued a presence in our school along with lay faculty. While the nuns are no longer present in our school today, we carry on their traditions of education and charity.
Our parish community is proud of the education that it has been able to provide to our youth. It is the primary mission of St. Mary's Parish and many sacrifices have been made to assure that we remain prosperous in this mission.
Today, our student population is approximately 145 students. Together with the Pastor, administration, teachers, and parents, we work together to ensure our children receive the finest possible education. We offer a progressive program that emphasizes religion, academic excellence, fine arts, and physical fitness. We have recently adopted a new curriculum with the addition of Eureka Math and Spirit of Truth Religion.
Our small class sizes, average 15 or less, give our teachers more opportunities to work with a student on a one-on-one basis or in small group settings. To help assess a student's strengths and weaknesses, a comprehensive assessment program has been implemented. We use MAP benchmark testing in math and reading three times a year. These assessments drive our curriculum and the daily lessons of our teachers.
In addition to our core curriculum, St. Mary's offers our students' religion classes, physical education, music, art, and computers. Our annual Fine Arts Night is held in the spring and showcases our students' talents in choral music, band, and art. Scholastic Bowl, Student Council, Speech Team and our successful sports teams contribute to the whole child experience at St. Mary's.
